It's a GIRL!

A very short week ago, we welcomed Skye Maxine into our family and I couldn't be happier about her birth. First, we were attempting a vbac (vaginal birth after cesarean) ... second, we were attempting it at home due to the hesitation of doctors and hospitals in our area to allow you to vbac without hinting pushing scaring you into another c-section. I could go on for quite a while about that subject, but instead lets move forward.

After my son's induction, emergency c-section, and the lengthy recovery that followed it - I knew I wanted to do everything I could to avoid that again. His birth story was and is a huge sadness that has never healed for me. I didn't get to hold him first, I didn't even get to hold him second.. I had to wait around an hour watching my family hold him because I was shaking so hard (from meds or adrenaline or from just being scared shitless? who knows). It truly makes me cry each time I talk about it for too long because I feel it could have been prevented. Again - long story but I will move forward.

Though I was often given strange or concerned looks for choosing a home birth, I wouldn't change it for the world. It was amazing to be in control of the situation, to trust my body, and to be in an environment that I felt comfortable and safe. In the following days, I got to eat the foods I like (ew, hospital food), I didn't get woken up by nursing staff at all hours of the night, and I was able to sleep in bed with my husband. My daughter also got to cut her sisters umbilical cord, and she LOVED being a part of her sisters birth.

While I don't think home birth is for everyone, it was certainly for US and I am so pleased to have another beautiful girl in my life. I had made a few dresses prior to her birth, but have since been pinning and dreaming and drafting away to create a wardrobe for her. I'm hoping to share some of it with you guys too! I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I'll be back next week to show you the faux Best Bottom diaper covers that I created to supplement our cloth diaper stash without spending hundreds of dollars. Though I will likely be posting less in these next weeks, know it's because I'm spending that time snuggling the sweetest baby.

    1. When we were deciding whether it was for us my midwife was very adamant that only those who feel comfortable birthing at home should do it- otherwise you'll spend your birth worried/distracted and that isn't positive. I think that really resonated with me, knowing that she only wanted me to do what was best for me and not what she considered the "best" birth option. It definitely made me feel comfortable and able to trust her!
Congratulations and good luck with your birth!!! When are you due?

  5. Mae, I was just thinking about you and the baby. She is seriously gorgeous. And how awesome that she was born at home! My girls were also born at home - I am a big proponent. Congrats on a successful vbac and a gorgeous new baby.
